Arethusa Nymph - daughter of Nereus and Doris; she was also the favourite of Diana, goddess of hunting and knowledge, was most famous for her transformation into a freshwater spring in Syracuse, Sicily. Pursued by the river god Alpheus, she was transformed into a spring by her patron goddess Artemis to escape him. The depiction of Arethusa on the coins of Syracuse was a common motif in the 5th century BC. The coin shows her head surrounded by dolphins, which represent her transformation into a spring.
