Philistis was one of the few real women, as opposed to goddesses, to be depicted on a Sicilian coin. She was the wife of Hieron II, a tyrant king of ancient Syracuse. The coin was minted between 274 and 216 BC. The obverse (front) of the coin depicts the veiled and diademed head of Queen Philistis. The reverse (back) depicts the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, driving a quadriga (a four-horse chariot).
T he inscription on the reverse reads "BAΣIΛIΣΣAΣ ΦIΛIΣTIΔOΣ," which translates to "of Queen Philistis".
