The coin was minted in the ancient city of Velia, which was located on the western coast of Italy and founded by Greeks in the 6th century BC. 

The obverse of the coin features the head of the goddess Athena. The reverse depicts a lion. These coins are best known for the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, who were from the city.  The coin is part of the Philistion group, a classification used by numismatists.
